Marvel merchandise – flawed heroes, fans with attitude

A billionaire with an ego problem, a teenager with money troubles, a scientist with anger-management needs: Marvel has always given its heroes flaws – and that's exactly why they've worked for decades, on the comic page as much as on the movie screen. Anyone who wears or collects Marvel isn't showing off a distant idol, but an attitude. At Elbenwald you'll find officially licensed Marvel merchandise spanning comics and the MCU: apparel, figures, mugs, and accessories.

What makes Marvel stand out?

Founded in 1939 as Timely Comics, the name Marvel took hold starting in 1961 – alongside a whole new breed of superhero. And of all things, it happened out of a mood to quit: Stan Lee wanted to walk away after 20 years in the comics business, until his wife Joan advised him to write one book he could be proud of first. The result was the Fantastic Four (1961) – the launchpad for Spider-Man (1962), the Hulk, the X-Men, and the Avengers (1963), created with artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. Captain America, incidentally, had already debuted in 1941 and is therefore older than the Marvel name itself.

Since "Iron Man" (2008) starring Robert Downey Jr., the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been retelling these stories for the big screen; "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) grossed around 2.8 billion US dollars and was, for a time, the highest-grossing film of all time. Marvel has been part of Disney since 2009. And sometimes this universe writes its own punchlines: for the "Ultimates" comics of 2002, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch drew Nick Fury unmistakably after Samuel L. Jackson – without asking him. Jackson discovered it in a comic shop and, instead of a lawsuit, negotiated a deal: if Nick Fury were ever brought to the screen, the role would be his. He's played it ever since "Iron Man."

Frequently asked questions

What Marvel products does Elbenwald carry?

The range runs from apparel like T-shirts and hoodies through Funko and action figures to mugs, jewelry, and accessories – officially licensed and spanning both Marvel universes. Use the filters to narrow the selection by hero or product type.

How do I recognize officially licensed Marvel merchandise?

By the license notice from Marvel or Disney on the product or packaging. Elbenwald carries exclusively licensed goods, for instance from manufacturers like Hasbro, Funko, Hot Toys, or LEGO, who produce officially for Marvel.

Comic look or MCU design – which one suits me?

Comic designs go for panel styling, bold colors, and the artists' own style, while MCU motifs take their cues from the films. Anyone who got into Marvel through the movies usually reaches for the film look, while longtime readers tend to prefer the comic artwork. Neither is wrong – if you can't decide, the only answer is: both.

Range overview

For wearing, Marvel T-shirts and Marvel hoodies lead the field – with logos, artwork, and quotes from both universes. On the shelf, many start with the Marvel Funko figures, since they need little space and bring joy in a lineup; action figures take over when things need to get more poseable. If you collect by hero, jump straight into the brand worlds: Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Hulk for the classics, the Avengers for team players, Deadpool for anyone who likes their fourth wall broken, and Loki for the faction that generally roots for the villain.

What else goes with it?

The eternal rivalry belongs to the fandom: DC Comics supplies the counter-argument, from Gotham to Metropolis. And since Marvel has belonged to the Disney family since 2009, Disney and Star Wars are closer than some fan debates would like to admit.
